Malawi may never have reached iconic, glory status as a destination compared to some of its African neighbours, but its star is rising with a growing appreciation of its unique contribution to Africa travel. The geographical variety allows for a very compelling itinerary. Lake Malawi is Africa’s third largest lake, created by a trough formed by the Great Rift Valley - an alluring expanse of glistening crystal-clear water, peppered with idyllic desert islands, perfect for snorkelling, diving and canoeing, or equally lazing shoreside. The lion-reintroduction programme at Majete Wildlife Reserve is regarded as pioneering and highly worthwhile wildlife viewing; whilst the majestic peaks of Mt Mulanje and the Zomba Plateau tempt the hiker, with its beautiful forests and exotic wildlife. Malawian friendliness is legendary and whilst Malawi may be lesser-known as a destination, its merits for the traveller should not be underestimated.

"The warm heart of Africa in more ways than one... Malawi is safe, friendly, affordable and diverse! They come for the wildlife, fall in love with the landscapes and come back for the people..."

Mike Varndell, Crafted Africa
